PENSIONER LOSES BEACH BATTLE

62 year old Leonie Jeffrey has lost her battle with the Ministry of Defence to buy a stretch of beach between Lydd Camp firing range and the Dungeness nuclear power station.

<IMG alt="Dungeness Power Station" hspace=10 src="images/dungeness.jpg" align=left vspace=10 border=0>The 1.4 acre  shingle beach on Romney Marsh is completely submerged at high tide and can only be reached by foot across the marhes, but is a popular spot for fishermen.

The beach came onto the market after the previous owner died and was expected to fetch £500 at auction.

But at a packed sale room in Maidstone, the Ministry was forced to pay £10,000 after the price was raised by bids from grandmother Leonie from Kennington near Ashford.

It was reported that the Defence ministry bought the land for public safety reasons.
