FERRY COMPANY MAKES FIRST CUT

The P&O ferry Pride of Provence has been withdrawn from the Dover and Calais route as part of a cost-cutting exercise.

<IMG alt="" hspace=10 src="images/prideprovence.jpg" align=left vspace=10 border=1>The crew are to be transferred to other ships while negotiations continue with unions over proposed job losses.

It is part of the cost cutting plans announced by the company in September when they told workers 840 jobs would have to be axed at the port, in a bid to buoy up the company.

A ballot last month of  Dover P&O workers in the RMT union voted for industrial action in protest at the plans.

Talks over proposed job losses are expected to conclude early next year.
