CARRY ON COLLECTING

The popular garden waste collection service provided by Shepway District Council is to continue throughout the year.

In previous years the collection finished at the end of November and restarted in April the following year. This year the council has been able to respond to residents’ requests to continue the service without a break.

Cllr George Bunting, Cabinet Member for the Environment said: “I am delighted that we are able to continue this popular service. We have received very positive feedback from residents who have taken part in the scheme.�

The garden waste collection began in 2002 in two trial areas and is now offered to most of the district. Residents are supplied with a brown-topped wheeled bin for their garden waste. The bins are emptied o­nce a fortnight and the material taken to a local farm for composting. The resulting compost is used o­n the farm as a soil conditioner.

Since the April this year more than 3,500 tonnes of garden waste have been collected and composted.
